I recently got this Cebora MIG welder and it’s got a few issues, so I’m going to repair it so I can use it. Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding is a method of welding in which a metal wire supplies an electric current to maintain an arc. This arc is shielded by an inert gas such as Argon or CO2. This Cebora 848 came with a tank of 25% CO2 and 75% Argon. The tank regulator did leak though. The power selector switch was also seized. Lastly, the wire wouldn’t feed properly through the stinger.

Disassembly

Overall, the welder was in okay shape, it just needed a few replacement parts. I started by cleaning the enclosure and getting all the dirt and dust off, since it’s been sitting in storage for over a decade.

I ordered a new gun and a new regulator from Amazon.

Selector Switch

A cam rotary switch uses a cam on a shaft to push a contact. Depending on the orientation of the cams, you can have many different switching combinations depending on the application. With regards to this welder, the power selector switches between different taps on the primary side of the power transformer.

I had to rebuild the seized rotatory switch. In the process of disassembling, the switch came apart. This meant finding the schematic online and thankfully it included a table with the switch positions and what contacts were on and off.

Each cam was different. The easiest to figure out was the load inputs. They are either off in position 0 or on in all other positions.

This switch selects wires leading to the transformer and determines the overall wire voltage.

Tank Regulator

Next I had to replace the gas regulator. This was pretty cheap off Amazon and has tank pressure and flow rate.

Attaching the new stinger was a bit of a challenge. Not only was the trigger a two wire, and not a single wire, but the positive side had a cable on the end instead of using a brass block crimped to the feedline. This meant I had to drill a hole through the welder and fish the cable to the rectifier on the other side.

This little 110 welder is pretty neat and while it may not be the best welder, it certainly gets the job done. This MIG welder repair job was a success.
